Grilled Cheese Bus for good – Independent Weekly

The Triangle’s only nonprofit food truck recently launched out of a former school bus. The Grilled Cheese Bus promotes community activism with low-income minority youth, one decadently gooey sandwich at a time. Read the Indy story here.

Yep, there are some perks to what I do. Like sharing UFO-sized fried green tomatoes with Avett Brothers‘ cellist Joe Kwon at The Pig while dishing on local pork and sustainable agriculture. Read the story to find out what the guys eat on tour, and what Joe loves to blog about. (Fun fact: there’s a [...]

Beyond the Vine – SavorNC Magazine

The latest SavorNC March/April issue is out on stands and, hopefully, in your mailbox. With 100 vineyards and counting, our state boasts a developing history of fine wine production. I had the opportunity to feature six North Carolina vineyards offering more than just a sweet-tempered glass of muscadine wine. We’ve got llamas, people! And even a [...]

Macarons slip past cupcakes as pastry trend du jour – Independent Weekly

Sweeten up this Valentine’s Day with confectionery couture. Leave behind thoughts of coconut flakes–that’s an American macaroon. The French macaron (pronounced “mac-ah-rohn”) is a dainty sandwiched confection unrivaled in texture and flavor, as layered and complex as one of Marie Antoinette’s outfits. My latest piece for the Independent Weekly explores our area’s newest obsession with [...]

Durham earns NYT mention, again – Big Bite: Independent Weekly

The New York Times sure does love Cackalacky. Durham exudes cool all over the place as #35 in the newspaper’s travel list of 41 Places to Go in 2011. What garnered the Bull City this coveted spot among the world’s most exotic locales (and only three other U.S. cities)? The food, dangit! We’re some happy [...]

Where to find N.C. seafood – Big Bite: Independent Weekly

It’s been more than 100 days, but every photo I encounter of the Gulf oil spill is still like a punch in the gut. Horrific images of sludge-soaked animals and shores not only disturb my environmental conscious, but the thought of eating seafood now prompts a queasiness in my stomach and disgust in my heart. [...]

Sandwhich’s inspired dinner menu: Morocco meets the South – Independent Weekly

I “reviewed” the new dinner menu at Sandwhich for Indy’s First Bite series. Both Hich and Janet Elbetri are animated, hilarious personalities, snarky at times, and their restaurant’s food is just as lively. A candid approach weaves throughout the new Sandwhich operation, reflected in the minimalist décor, openly visible kitchen and, above all, an inspired, [...]
